How well do you follow directions?
When you read this, what do you see?
I LOVE PARIS IN THE
THE SPRINGTIME!
Did you read "I love Paris in the springtime?" If so, you're wrong. Look again and check what is really spelled. As you can see, it's important to pay attention and follow directions; following directions can change how something looks, and can also change your thoughts about what is presented in front of you.
So how does this apply to your job search? Following directions is a crucial (and often forgotten) step in securing your next job. Think about how much time one spends researching opportunities, updating their resume, and picking out the perfect suit. All of these are important, yes, but the last step – proofreading and making sure directions are followed - can be a 'doozie'!
I received an interesting email from an employer when I reached out to them for placement information related to our university. The employer provided some excellent general feedback (note: the student’s name has been changed):
"We got several quality resumes but, though our listing specified the inclusion of a cover letter, John was the ONLY student from your university who added a cover letter to his resume. He is, therefore, the only student we interviewed. You might stress to students that, particularly in this job market the cover letter is essential in making them stand out from the crowd! We ended up hiring a student from another local university for our second internship for this reason, though we have a strong preference for your grads."
This makes me think…how is it that job hopefuls can work so hard to find the perfect opportunity, then forget such an important piece of the puzzle? I say to you, whether you are a current student, recent graduate, or professional in transition – make sure to follow directions! Read over your applications several times to ensure all needs are met. Something as small as forgetting a cover letter can cost you – and in this economy, every cost counts!
