Been unemployed for 3 months... got an offer... should I take it?
You must think I'm nuts! Actually pondering if I should take this job?
Prior to losing my job, I worked for a large company in a mid manager level position. I led a team of 4 individuals and reported to a VP. Because of downsizing brought about by the downturn in the economy, I was laid off with a 6 month severance package.
Three months later, I’ve been offered a mid-entry level position is a medium size company.
Here are my concerns:
Yes, it’s a job and I should be grateful to have an opportunity to work again but at what expense? I’ll most likely leave as soon as a better offer becomes available. I wouldn’t want to inconvenience this employer and potentially “burn a bridge”.
It’s not that I think it’s beneath me to take a position that I’m over qualified for but my ego is taking a beating right now.
On the other side of the coin, I’m thinking this could be a great way to get my foot in the door, do well and potentially move up the ranks.
Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

take the job
I understand that your ego might be hurtin' right now but there aren't exactly a plethera of jobs out there. If it's a good company, I think it's worth it. I believe in the future when you are looking for another job, it would be easier to explain a few months at a job below your skills level than a few months without any employment. It will do you some good to get out there and start working again. You will meet new people and have new experiences that will help you in the long run. and like you mentioned, you'll have a foot in the door and who knows may get promoted quickly.
good luck!
totally agree
I couldn't agree more. I've heard both sides to this discussion. But I think getting out and working is soooo important, both professionally AND mentally, at least from my experiences. It at least gets your foot back in the door and gets you emotionally back on track.
