Batter Up...Don't Warm the Bench!
Happy Monday, Lemonaders!
When you are unemployed, time can creep by slowly. Are you taking advantage of every opportunity to make your time count? What are you doing to gain skills that you can add to your resume? Think back to when you were employed and your to-do list was overwhelming. What are some of the things you have always wanted to do, but couldn’t find the time for? To get you brainstorming, here are some ideas.
What issues are you passionate about? You may have been deeply touched by the conflict in Darfur but have not had the time to help raise awareness. Perhaps you have always wanted to volunteer as a big brother or big sister or help prepare food for the homeless. From raising awareness about global issues to becoming more involved in your local community, there are many opportunities to give back and make a difference.
Who do you wish you could spend more time with? For parents, you can get involved in coaching a team or joining a parent-teacher organization. If you live in a community, consider organizing a neighborhood get-together. Meeting your neighbors will increase your network, and you may make new friends. In addition, recreational and athletic activities frequently get pushed aside when we get too busy. Consider going to a local park or recreation center and asking about summer sport leagues for adults. If you are more creative, look into art classes such as cooking, jewelry making, and painting.
All of these activities are a great way to interact with others, expand your network, and do something you enjoy. Keep in mind you will also use new skills and fill the gap on your resume. So get out there and get busy!
